Science communication undergoing a transformation

Poverty, inequality, migration, conflict, and ecology are all important research topics for staff at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS). A special feature of their research methodology is the way it is fully integrated with science communication and public engagement activities.
These activities can be roughly divided into three categories. First, the ISS actively involves research participants and partners in the research process. Second, it integrates research findings with other research or teaching initiatives in a sustainable manner. And third, it converts research results into a variety of different formats so as to make them accessible to target groups without a social-science background. For example, the ISS cooperates with medical professionals, national and international policymakers and researchers in the field of disaster, conflict and development studies, and makes the acquired information accessible to the general public.
By directly and actively involving these groups, it aims to strengthen the voice of marginalised communities and to contribute to global development and social justice. The ISS will use the grant from the Rewarded! Fund to pursue and further expand this integrated form of research and engagement.
